About the Club
Calgary Lawn Bowling Club invites you to join us to try out this great game.
Club Update: May 2010
Welcome back! Our season will officially open on Monday May 24th @ 1 p.m. with our annual Charity Jitney. We do hope to be out there before that, however, as the greens will be open for general play by the second week of May, always weather permitting, of course.
This season we are looking forward to hosting a "Media Day" on Thursday May 26th, organized by Kathe Lemon from the Rotary Lawn Bowling Club, in conjunction with the other bowling clubs in town. We hope this event will expose our game to some of the media in our city, and all are welcome to come and see the action.
Our Junior programme will start on May 8th. We hope to play every Saturday morning thereafter at 10 a.m. and every Monday evening, starting on May 31st at 6.30 p.m., except for some of the days when there are tournaments scheduled for our greens. All juniors (children aged between eight and eighteen) are very welcome to come and try out the game. We will have instructors at the green each of those days at the noted times, and we have bowls for the children to use. There will also be a Junior Fun Day, sponsored by our Provincial Association, at our greens, on Saturday May 29th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and we welcome any juniors to join us for that fun event. Contact Heather Mackie for further details @ heathermackie@shaw.ca.
Our formal club and inter club leagues will start in June, and this year we will again be hosting some Provincial Championships, with the Ladies’ and Men’s Fours and the Mixed Pairs events at our greens in June and August respectively.
New Bowlers Fours League Announcement
In response to interest expressed by visitors, Calgary Lawn Bowling Club is hoping to start a new Wednesday Night Fours League this summer. We are accepting registrations by teams or individuals willing to join others to form a team. We hope to have play begin Wednesday, June 16th, and continue at least through July 28th. Bowls and coaching will be provided. Arrangements for instruction prior to the start of the league will be possible. The cost will be $100 per person, which includes full membership in the club. League fees would include drink tickets, closing BBQ and tournament, and trophies. Play would consist of two five- or six-end games (about 1 hour each) per night. If you are interested in playing in this league, send enquiries to gfre@telus.net.
If you just want to try out our great game, please browse the rest of our website for the days and times of play, and pop down to see us or come on a Monday evening at around 6.30 p.m. to the free lessons sessions.
See you all at the greens, soon.
How to Participate
All you need is to show up at the noted times, with smooth soled, heel-less shoes, and we will provide everything else you need for a game. We have members on hand to teach you the basics and try out the bowls for size, fit, etc. After a few free lessons, which includes the use of the club bowls, we will invite you to join the members for a few trial games, to see if you want to join our club. The lesson times are noted on the “playing times and lessons” page in the website, and other arrangements could be made, with any of our members or coaches, on an individual basis if required. You can call us to arrange a visit or just drop in at one of the lesson times. Lessons are usually on Saturday mornings and Monday nights for JUNIORS and Monday and Thursday nights for ADULTS.
What to Wear
Our dress code is fairly relaxed other than the requirement for smooth soled, heel-less shoes. We usually require all “whites” for any official Provincial Playdowns or Club Trophy competitions, and our Saturday and holiday Monday jitneys. The whites can be trousers or shorts with collared shirts for the men, and dresses, shorts, slacks, or skirts, with tops or blouses for the ladies.
Who Should Play
You do not have to be a serious competitive bowler — play for the exercise and social interaction with the other members, like many of our members, or join the various more serious competitive leagues. If you do choose to get into the competitive side of the game, and you practice enough, there is a chance that you can qualify to represent the province at a National Championship, with events held in various provinces across Canada. In Alberta, if you win a provincial title, your travel costs are usually covered when you go to the National Event regardless of where it is held.
Where Are We
Our bowling green is located just south of downtown in Connaught at:
