The Calgary Lawn Bowling Club began in 1912 as Calgary’s first public lawn bowling club, with weekly matches played on the Normal School grounds downtown. By 1913, the club had moved to “Judge Winter’s Greens” — the vegetable garden of Judge William Roland Winter’s sandstone home in Rouleauville (now Mission). Early members recalled that “it required the utmost skill to direct a bowl, not only on account of the uneven surface, but because of the trees that intervened in the line of play.”
Our History

By the early 1920s, the club had grown in popularity, hosting Thanksgiving matches, local tournaments, and encouraging churches and community groups to form their own teams. Even after membership declined following World War I, ten members, including Judge Winter, met in 1923 to reorganize the club as a private non-profit. As Judge Winter said at the time, “there is no reason why a lawn bowling club should not be in operation, and be highly successful in Calgary.”
In 1928, the club expanded again, founding the Ladies’ Calgary Lawn Bowling Club and securing land on 16th Avenue SW, where it thrived for the next 86 years. In 2016, the club relocated to Spruce Cliff to continue its legacy on two world-class greens—now considered among the finest in Canada. Today, CLBC remains a vibrant non-profit promoting lawn bowling for all ages and abilities, blending over 100 years of history with a welcoming, modern community of players.
