CLBC Ladies’ Doubles
In 1967, the Ladies’ Calgary Lawn Bowling Club introduced the Helen Cunningham Ladies Doubles Trophy to mark a century of Confederation and honor a woman who had profoundly influenced the sport of lawn bowling in Calgary. This prestigious award was named after Mrs. Helen Cunningham, a stalwart of the lawn bowling community, in recognition of her extraordinary dedication and contributions of both local and provincial levels.
Mrs. Cunningham’s journey began in 1903 when she arrived in Calgary. At a time when women’s participation in sports was limited, she emerged as a pioneer, advocating tirelessly for women’s rights to enjoy and compete in lawn bowling. Her vision and determination led to the establishment of the Ladies’ Calgary Lawn Bowling Club in 1928, providing women in Calgary with a dedicated space to engage in the sport they loved.
Her contributions went beyond just founding the club. Mrs. Cunningham’s leadership and passion fostered a vibrant community, encouraging women to take up the sport and compete. Her legacy was cemented through her appointment as an Honorary Life Member of the club, a testament to her lasting impact.
The Helen Cunningham Ladies Doubles Trophy stands as a symbol of her commitment and achievements. Each year, as players compete for this trophy, they honor Mrs. Cunningham’s legacy, celebrating the inclusive and thriving environment she worked so hard to create. Her story continues to inspire generations of lawn bowlers, reminding them of the power of dedication and the importance of advocating for equal opportunities in sport.

CLBC Ladies’ Singles
The Ladies’ Singles Trophy, presented by Mrs. Bokouski in 1929, holds a special place in the Calgary Lawn Bowling Club’s history as the oldest continuously played trophy. This tradition honors the club’s commitment to inclusivity, initiated by the formation of the Ladies’ Calgary Lawn Bowling Club a year earlier. Mr. J.C. Bokouski, the club’s second president, and his wife, a former member of the Ladies’ Calgary Lawn Bowling Club, played significant roles in this progress.
Despite a 1969 recommendation to amalgamate the men’s and ladies’ sections being rejected as inconsistent with the original constitution, the sections were finally united in 1994. This milestone year also saw Mrs. S.M. Thompson become the club’s 35th president and the first woman to lead the newly amalgamated club.
Today, the club continues to play for the Ladies’ Singles Trophy to celebrate its rich history, honor the contributions of its past members, and uphold the values of inclusivity and unity that have shaped its evolution.

CLBC Men’s Doubles
The Calgary Lawn Bowling Club stands as a testament to the rich history and enduring spirit of its members. Among the many events that mark the club’s calendar, the Tom Jackson Memorial Men’s Club Doubles holds a special place. Established after Tom Jackson’s passing in August 1974, this tournament is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of a family that has been integral to the club’s history and Calgary’s lawn bowling scene.
The Jackson family, pioneers of lawn bowling in Calgary, immigrated from Scotland in 1931. The three Jackson brothers – Tom, Bill, and Guy – brought with them a passion for the sport that would leave a lasting impact on the local and provincial lawn bowling community. Their dedication and skill not only elevated the sport but also helped shape the future of lawn bowling in the region.
Guy Jackson, with his unwavering commitment, served as the club’s 12th president, guiding it through years of growth and development. Tom Jackson, whose name the memorial doubles proudly bear, served as the club’s 21st president and was a member of multiple clubs. His leadership and love for the game inspired many and set a standard for excellence and community spirit.
Tom Jackson’s legacy extends beyond his contributions to lawn bowling. A first World War veteran, Tom dedicated his life to both his community and the sport he loved. His dedication and passion left an indelible mark on those who knew him and on the club he helped to build.
Each year, members of the Calgary Lawn Bowling Club come together to compete in The Tom Jackson Memorial Men’s Club Doubles. This event is not just about winning; it is about honoring the memory of a man who gave so much to his community.
